Dorset launches landlord accreditation scheme

Councils in Dorset are celebrating the launch of a new landlord accreditation scheme.

To be listed on the Dorset Register of Accredited Landlords (DRAL), landlords must first be accredited with the National Landlords Association, National Landlord Accreditation Scheme or the Residential Landlords Association Accreditation Scheme. They will also be required to sign a code of conduct.

In return, different councils in Dorset will offer benefits ranging from financial assistance for insulation, priority in a new self-service housing benefit scheme, and their name and properties being advertised on the scheme’s website. They will also have access to online development courses on topics such as rental legislation and management practice.

Christchurch, East Dorset, Purbeck and Poole councils have committed to the scheme, which is being administered by Bournemouth. More councils are are expected to sign up once the system is up and running.

“Working closely with the accreditation bodies we can ensure that landlords are fully aware of their legal requirements and ensure that properties are well managed”, said councillor Robert Lawton, cabinet member for housing. “This will free up more time for the council to focus its efforts on tackling problem properties.”
