Sheffield landlords under increased scrutiny

February 6th, 2013

Private landlords renting properties in Sheffield are being encouraged to bring their portfolios up to scratch by the local council.

Sheffield Council believes that some of the privately-owned accommodation lags behind the quality of council housing, which is currently undergoing a £700 million revamp in a bid to make it more appealing to tenants.

Sheffield Council leader Councillor Julie Dore told The Sheffield Star: “I would like private-rented housing to have tighter regulation but legislation is something we have no control over.

“What we are proposing is to set up a responsible landlord accreditation scheme.”

The improvement of properties on the rental market in the steel city was highlighted in a recent Fairness Commission report, which has the aim of trying to close the gap in the quality of life between those who live in the affluent areas of the city and those who reside in poor areas.

Ajay Jagota of KIS Lettings recently said landlords should regularly inspect the houses and flats in their portfolio to avoid them falling into a state of disrepair during a tenancy.
