London Councils backs measures to tackle housing crisis

January 30th, 2013

London Councils has urged that action must be taken to bring private landlords back to the sector and help the housing crisis within the capital.

The organisation stated that homeless people have had to be put up in “bed and breakfast” accommodation due to the fact that many private landlords are being driven away from the market.

Officials said that they have been in discussion with the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to ensure that measures are being implemented to ensure that this can change.

Among these is a tax relief initiative for landlords which will allows them to boost the supply of private sector rented properties and help them to once again house homeless people.

Mayor Sir Steve Bullock, London Councils executive member for housing, said: “While we need to address the long term housing shortage in London, we need to act now to tackle the acute housing crisis in the capital – primarily caused by the chronic shortage of temporary accommodation available for councils to place homeless Londoners.”
