Cambridge City Council to target rogue landlords

January 17th, 2013

Cambridge City Council has announced the launch of a new initiative which aims to crackdown on rogue landlords operating within the area.

The aim is to toughen the authority’s stance against those who are mismanaging both their properties and tenants. It will include an increased number of inspections following a large number of complains that the council received.

Cambridge News reported that the local authority had been inundated with 158 grievances against landlords over 2012 and the property leasers are being warned that they could face prosecutions if they do not improve their standards.

A number of councils across the UK are also taking similar action with the likes of Liverpool and Newham both launching schemes to tackle the problem of rogue landlords.

Councillor Catherine Smart, executive councillor for housing in Cambridge, said: “With so many people having to rely on private landlords in Cambridge we must strive to protect tenants from sub-standard and rogue landlords.”
