One in Three Undergraduates are Uninsured

October 1st, 2009

Research showed that one in three University students do not have home insurance to protect their personal possessions against any losses or damages.

Undergraduate students are the most dynamic group in purchasing and owning valuable portable items. An estimate of £3,500 worth of personal possessions - as reported - can be found from each university students. Those items are most commonly known as TVs, laptops, mobile phones, music players, textbooks, etc. As a result, an average shared accommodation with 4 student tenants could be worth approximately £14,000 - which has explained overtly the reason for students to be the most targeted group for burglars.

Being a vulnerable target group, university students are highly recommended to purchase insurance when living away from home. Students’ possessions would normally be covered under their parents’ home insurance; however, a poll showed 34% of undergraduate students are not covered with any home insurance; while a further 10% of them admitted not knowing whether they are insured or not. These figures contributed to an estimate of £573 million worth of uninsured items in students’ accommodation.

Only some home insurance covers personal possessions of all the family members when staying away from home. Therefore, it is essential for the parents to check if their home insurance covers their children’s belongings while they are away.
